Heritage and education charity, the National Coal Mining Museum for England has invested in Harlequin CRM software to build closer relationships with visitors and expand its fundraising activity.

With 100,000 visitors each year, an income of over £3.5 million and a workforce of 93 staff, the Museum is growing its voluntary income from individuals in response to decreased funding.

Liz Orme, Development Officer at the National Coal Mining Museum explains: “As a national museum we receive Government funding; however, in the current climate, this has been reduced so we are expanding our development activity and needed new charity management software.

“Utilising technology, we have a fantastic opportunity to nurture one-time visitors into longer term supporters and build individual giving. Our new system will transform the efficiency of our ongoing ‘Dig Deep & Donate’ and ‘Sponsor a Pony’ campaigns; it will also help our 2015 ‘Miners’ Memorial Garden’ appeal have more impact.”

The Museum will use Harlequin CRM for contact and campaign management and fundraising from grants, corporates, legacies and individuals – including regular giving programmes. In future it will roll out the Events and Volunteer modules, and look at integration with the front-of-house ticketing system.

Sharon Batty, Development Officer at the Museum adds: “We chose Harlequin based on recommendations and its strong reputation for customer service. We were impressed by the breadth of charity software functionality and that we could customise templates to our needs – the system stands out for both quality and value.”

Tom Ellis, Managing Director of Harlequin concludes:  “We are delighted that another National Museum has selected Harlequin. We are confident the system will quickly deliver the charity’s initial objectives to consolidate information, bring consistency to donor development and automate manual tasks.”

In 2014, the National Museum of the Royal Navy invested in Harlequin.
More about the National Coal Mining Museum for England

The National Coal Mining Museum for England aims to keep coal mining alive by collecting and preserving the industry’s rich heritage, creating enjoyable and inspiring ways to learn for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

The charity’s objectives are to advance the education of the public in the history of mining in England by the provision and maintenance of a museum both underground and on the surface at the former Caphouse Colliery in Yorkshire for the demonstration of past and contemporary mining methods and the exhibition of machinery and other items connected with mining and industrial archaeology. Caphouse is probably the oldest coal-mine shaft still in everyday use in Britain today.

As a national museum the National Coal Mining Museum for England is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport through the National Museum of Science & Industry. The Museum is also a registered charity (no.517325).
